What is your role at UPHS – Bell?
I am a Family Medicine provider at UP Health System – Bell. I have been a provider in the Family Medicine Suite for 37 wonderful years and I am forever grateful for those years.
What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
Growing up, a lot of my friends talked frequently and were passionate about medicine and becoming a doctor. I was not sure if I was going to take that route when it was time to decide what I was going to study, but after talking with my friends – they encouraged me to take a step out of my comfort zone, study medicine, and become a doctor. In my faith, I believe that many doors have been opened for me, leading me to this wonderful career that has been a great part of my life.
After 37 years of service at UPHS – Bell, Dr. Carlson is retiring. What are you going to miss most about working at UPHS – Bell?
First and foremost, I am going to miss my patients. We have created some great relationships throughout the years and I will miss seeing them day to day – but I hope their health continues to grow. Secondly, the staff at Bell is amazing. We have great colleagues here, we work very well together, and have the same goal of making our communities healthier.
What do you look most forward to with your retirement?
I am most excited to spend a lot more quality time with my family. We enjoy traveling and retirement will allow me to make as many plans as I would like without having to worry about a schedule. I also look forward to getting back to the hobbies that I enjoy – singing, gardening, skiing, snowshoeing, and carpentry.
