UPHS – Bell Heroes | Annie Skewis, DNP, FNP-BC, CPLC

Annie Skewis is a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatrics and Family Medicine at UP Health System – Bell.

What is your role at UPHS-Bell?
I am a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatrics and Family Medicine at UP Health System – Bell.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
When I was younger my grandpa had a stroke and I saw a wonderful team of individuals help him beat the odds when some told him he would never walk again.  I wanted to continue that type of care and become a nurse. It is important to me to listen to every voice no matter how young and treat them in a holistic way.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
At this moment I take care of newborns to young adults and absolutely love it. I get to watch babies grow and develop at their well-child exams, help young adults with all aspects of their health including social and mental health, and finally help kids feel better at their sick visits. It is an honor to be able to watch these kids grow up into young adults.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I have worked at UPHS – Bell since 2009, first as a nurse and now as a nurse practitioner.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
Since starting in healthcare there have been many changes that I have seen.  I think the biggest being with the recent pandemic, has changed the way I can give care to my patients and I have had to think more outside the box to make sure that these children are meeting developmental milestones.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
I run a nonprofit organization in memory of my daughter to help other families that experience pregnancy and infant loss. I love to coach basketball at one of our local schools and hike up Sugarloaf, as well as hike to many of the beautiful waterfalls in the area.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Bell?
I love working at UPHS – Bell because I can give back to the community that I grew up in.  I also love that we treat each other like a family here, and It is very rewarding and humbling to watch our new generation of “Yooper’s” become young adults and help them physically, mentally, and socially.
