UPHS — Marquette Heroes | Amy Neaves

Amy Neaves, Clinic LPN in the Brain and Spine Center at UP Health System – Marquette.

What is your role at UPHS — Marquette?
I am a Clinic LPN for the Brain and Spine Center Neurology Clinic at UP Health System Marquette.

What was your inspiration for getting into healthcare?
My grandmother was a nurse and I always wanted to do something that pleased her.  I love helping people and my experience with health occupations class in high school solidified that I wanted to be a nurse.

What’s a typical day like for you? What is it like working in this field?
Typically, my day consists of taking care of patients in the clinic and making sure that things are going smoothly for the providers. I answer a lot of phone calls from patients outside of the clinic and ensure that their needs are taken care of. The days are busy; you can come in expecting to do one thing, but those plans can change very quickly. Prioritizing and tasks is a priority.

How long have you been employed here? Have you always been in the same position?
I started working here in the late ’90s. I worked first in Dietary, and then Medical Records for a while, then left to be a stay-at-home mom for 10 years. I came back as an LPN in 2011 and worked in Bariatric Services for 4 years. I’ve been in my current role for the past 5 years. In the next few weeks, I will be transitioning to a new role, in a new department as a Registered Nurse. I am excited for the opportunity to continue to grow and learn here.

What are some of the big changes you have experienced in this position?
The world of Neurology is constantly changing and new treatments and medications are becoming available almost daily. It is exciting to be able to offer new things to our patients and witness the changes that happen in their lives.

What are some of your interests outside of work? What is your favorite local gem?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my husband, our adult daughters, and our dog, George. We are planning to spend a lot of time this summer exploring the side-by-side trails across the Upper Peninsula.

My favorite local gem is definitely Lake Superior. I especially enjoy the evening sunsets gathered with family and friends around the campfire. Life is very peaceful at the beach.

What do you enjoy most about working at UPHS – Marquette?
The people that I work with and all that I have met along the way are what I enjoy the most about working here. I have lived in Marquette my whole life and I can honestly say that this is the only place that I envisioned myself working. I have grown here over the years, personally and professionally. Many of my coworkers have gone on to become my lifelong friends. The people are my favorite part of UP Health System.
